Most of our geographic content focuses on Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. This piece covers three more major Western European markets where the same platforms operate and where demand for native-language contributors is real: the Netherlands, France, and Belgium.
Platform Access: Same as Germany
All platforms we review — Mercor, Outlier AI, SME Careers, DataAnnotation.tech, and others — accept contractors from the Netherlands, France, and Belgium on equal terms with Germany and other EU countries. The W-8BEN process works identically, and payment via Wise is equally accessible from Amsterdam, Paris, or Brussels.
The Language Premium for Dutch, French, and Belgian Contractors
Native Dutch and French speakers access the same language premium advantage we describe for German speakers in our German speakers piece:
- Dutch (Netherlands) — native Dutch speakers access Dutch-language evaluation tracks on Outlier AI and CrowdGen; Dutch is a smaller-volume language than German or French, which can mean less competition for available language-specific tasks
- French (France and Belgium) — French is among the most in-demand non-English languages for AI training globally; French-language evaluation tracks are available on Outlier AI, CrowdGen, DataAnnotation.tech, and SME Careers
- Belgian bilingualism — native French/Dutch bilingual speakers in Belgium have access to both language tracks simultaneously, a genuine dual advantage
Local Tax and Compliance Notes
Each country has its own freelance registration and tax framework:
- Netherlands — freelancers typically register as ZZP (Zelfstandige Zonder Personeel) with the KVK (Chamber of Commerce); BTW (VAT) registration applies above the threshold
- France — the auto-entrepreneur / micro-entrepreneur status is the common path for individual freelancers; simplified social contribution system with turnover thresholds
- Belgium — freelance activity requires registration with the Banque-Carrefour des Entreprises (BCE) and INASTI social insurance contributions for self-employed workers
As with all our geographic compliance notes: verify your specific situation with a local accountant before starting significant income. The platforms work the same; the local obligations differ.
Netherlands, France, and Belgium contractors have the same platform access as German workers — with the added advantage that French is one of the most in-demand non-English AI training languages globally.
Getting Started
The practical starting point is identical to our recommendation for German-based workers: apply to Mercor first, add Outlier AI for the French or Dutch language track, and set up a Wise account before your first payout. Our week-one checklist applies without modification.
For Nordic and Eastern European countries, we have a dedicated geographic guide covering Sweden, Poland, Czech Republic, and more.
For Spain and Italy specifically, we have a dedicated country guide.
Platform Availability in the Benelux and France
All major platforms accept EU applicants regardless of specific country: Mercor, DataAnnotation.tech, Alignerr, Mindrift, Outlier AI, CrowdGen, and RemoExperts all onboard contractors from the Netherlands, France, and Belgium. Language-specific tracks are particularly relevant: French native speakers have consistent demand on most platforms, Dutch speakers have smaller but real demand, and Belgian French/Dutch bilinguals can access both tracks simultaneously. Belgian applicants with legal or financial backgrounds qualify for the specialist tracks on Mercor and SME Careers.
Tax and Compliance Notes for Benelux/France
AI training income earned by Dutch, Belgian, and French residents is subject to the same self-employment disclosure requirements as any other freelance income in those countries. Netherlands residents register with the KvK as ZZP; French residents use the auto-entrepreneur/micro-entrepreneur regime; Belgian residents use the self-employed status declaration. Payment via Wise or PayPal both work across all three countries. Consult a local tax adviser for the specific thresholds and deduction rules in your country.
