What Happens After You're
Accepted? Your First Week on Mercor

Most of our content focuses on getting accepted to Mercor — covered in detail in our application tips guide. But "what happens after that?" is a genuinely common follow-up question. Here's a real walkthrough of the actual first week.

Day 1: The Acceptance Notification

You receive notification that your AI video interview was approved. This arrives via email and inside the platform itself. At this point, you have access to your contractor dashboard, but you haven't yet been matched to specific projects — there's a short gap between approval and active task availability.

Day 1-2: Completing Onboarding Paperwork

Before any paid work, two pieces of administrative setup are required:

• The W-8BEN form — takes about 5 minutes, covered in full detail in our W-8BEN walkthrough. This certifies your non-US status for tax withholding purposes.
• Stripe account connection — setting up or linking a Stripe account for receiving weekly payments. If you don't already have one, this takes a few additional minutes.

This paperwork is unpaid time, but it's brief — combined, expect roughly 10-15 minutes of setup before you're fully ready to receive project assignments.

Day 2-5: Waiting for Project Matching

This is the part that varies the most. Mercor's algorithm matches approved contractors to available projects based on your stated skills and the LinkedIn profile information you provided during signup. In our experience and according to multiple user reports, this matching process can take anywhere from a few days to roughly two weeks.

First Task Assignment

Once matched, you'll typically be assigned to a generalist task category first — things like response rating or basic content evaluation — unless your profile specifically qualified you for a specialized track immediately. Instructions are generally clear and specific, walking through exactly what's expected for that particular task type.

Completing Your First Tasks

Most generalist tasks are designed to be completed in relatively short sessions — anywhere from a few minutes to perhaps half an hour per task, depending on complexity. There's no minimum hourly commitment required; you complete what's available and log off whenever you choose.

Your First Payment

Mercor processes payments weekly, every Wednesday, via Stripe. Practically, this means your first payment timing depends on exactly when in the weekly cycle you complete your first billable work:

• If you complete tasks early in the week (before the Wednesday cutoff), you'll typically receive payment that same week.
• If you complete tasks after the cutoff, your first payment arrives the following Wednesday.

In practice, most new contractors see their first payment within 1-2 weeks of completing their first paid task — combined with the initial matching wait, the realistic total timeline from interview approval to first payment is often around 2-3 weeks.

What to Expect in Terms of Volume

Don't expect maximum task availability immediately. New contractors typically see a moderate task flow initially, which tends to expand as you build a positive completion history. This pattern is consistent with what we describe in our broader income report — early weeks tend to be lighter than later ones, not because anything is wrong, but because trust and matching improve over time.

Putting It Together

Realistically: expect roughly 10-15 minutes of paperwork, then a wait of several days to two weeks for project matching, followed by your first paid task and a payment landing within 1-2 weeks after that. The total timeline from acceptance to first money in your account is commonly around 2-3 weeks — worth knowing upfront so you don't mistake the normal matching delay for something being wrong.
