Most of our content focuses on the top-tier platforms — Mercor, SME Careers, and similar. But a meaningful number of people specifically search for the absolute easiest entry points, so I spent one full week testing three of the lowest-barrier platforms we review: Toloka AI, CrowdGen, and OneForma. Here's exactly what happened.

Day 1: Signing Up

Toloka AI lived up to its reputation — instant access, no screening, working within minutes of creating an account. CrowdGen required a short application that was approved within about a day. OneForma's process took slightly longer, requiring some basic profile information before tasks became available, landing access by the end of day one.

Days 2-7: The Actual Work

PlatformHours WorkedIncomeEffective Hourly
Toloka AI~6 hrs€8~€1.30/hr
CrowdGen~5 hrs€42~€8.40/hr
OneForma~4 hrs€58~€14.50/hr

Total for the week: roughly €108 across about 15 hours of work, for an average effective rate of approximately €7.20/hr — well below Germany's minimum wage and dramatically below what our top-tier platforms offer for comparable or even less time investment.

Toloka AI: Confirmed the Reputation

Toloka's effective rate matched exactly what we'd describe in our deeper investigation into the platform — instant access, but pay so low it's barely worth the time. Tasks were simple (image labeling, basic classification) but paid fractions of a cent each, requiring enormous volume to add up to anything meaningful.

CrowdGen: A Step Up, Still Modest

CrowdGen's pay was noticeably better than Toloka's — roughly six times higher per hour in this test. Tasks were more varied, including some multilingual content work that played to specific language skills. Still well below top-tier platform rates, but a more reasonable use of time than Toloka.

OneForma: The Best of the Three

OneForma produced the best results in this specific test, largely due to a search quality rating project that paid better than the platform's typically advertised range. This matches what we describe in our full OneForma review — results vary significantly by which specific projects happen to be available, and multilingual workers in particular may see better outcomes than this English-only test reflects.

What This Confirms

This week-long test reinforces exactly what our individual reviews already conclude: these three platforms are legitimate, but none should be treated as anything beyond a temporary starting point or filler activity. The combined weekly total (€108) is roughly equivalent to what a single strong day on Mercor or SME Careers can produce.

If you're brand new and want to start earning literally today while waiting for approval on better platforms, this tier can serve that narrow bridging purpose. As anything beyond that, the time-to-income ratio simply doesn't compare to applying to our top-ranked platforms instead.

Our Recommendation

If you're choosing where to spend a week of effort, apply to Mercor and SME Careers first — both have acceptance rates above 50% and approval within days to two weeks, after which the pay difference compared to this experiment is substantial. Treat platforms like Toloka, CrowdGen, and OneForma as filler activity during the waiting period, not a destination in themselves.

The Multi-Platform Approach

The highest-earning AI training contractors don't rely on a single platform. Task availability on any platform varies by project cycle — some weeks are busy, some are slow. Running 2-3 platforms simultaneously means your weekly income is smoothed across multiple task pools. The application investment (typically 20-45 minutes per platform) is paid back within the first week of active work on each new platform. See our full platform guide for the complete ranked list and Platform Picker for a personalised recommendation based on your background.

Getting Started This Week

The most common mistake is applying to one platform and waiting for full approval before applying to the next. Apply to 3 platforms in the same week: Mercor (AI video interview, 20 min), DataAnnotation.tech (skills assessment, 30-45 min), and one specialist platform matched to your background. All three approval processes run in parallel, and you'll have at least one active within 2 weeks rather than waiting 6 weeks sequentially.
