Our individual trust pieces — on Mercor, Outlier AI, Handshake AI, and others — each verify a specific platform's legitimacy. This article is different: it's the actual repeatable method you can apply yourself to any platform we haven't reviewed yet, including newer names like the ones we discuss in our piece on AfterQuery and Invisible Technologies.

Step 1: Search for Funding History and Press Coverage

Real companies, especially in the AI space, generally have some kind of documented funding or financial history. Search the company name alongside terms like "funding," "Series A," "Series B," or "investors." Mercor's connection to being named one of Bloomberg's AI Startups to Watch, or SME Careers' backing from NVIDIA Ventures (covered in our SME Careers legitimacy piece), are exactly the kind of verifiable, specific details a real company accumulates over time.

Step 2: Check for Named Leadership and a Real Team

Look for an actual leadership team listed on the company website or LinkedIn. Real executives have work histories, prior roles, and a presence that predates the company by years. A generic "About Us" page with no named individuals, or executive profiles that appear suspiciously new with no prior history, is a meaningful gap worth noting.

Step 3: Reverse Image Search Logos and Team Photos

This is a genuinely underused but effective technique: run a reverse image search on the company logo and any team photos. Scam operations sometimes use stolen logos or stock photography presented as real team members. A few minutes of reverse image searching can reveal this immediately if it's happening.

Step 4: Verify the Payment Processor

Legitimate platforms use established, known payment processing services. Across our reviews, we've documented platforms using Stripe (Mercor, Handshake AI), Deel (SME Careers), Tipalti (Outlier AI), and PayPal (DataAnnotation.tech) — all recognizable, established services. If a platform uses an unfamiliar payment method you can't independently verify, or asks you to provide payment information through unofficial channels, that's worth real scrutiny.

A real, established payment processor doesn't guarantee everything else about a platform is fine — but its absence, or reliance on an unverifiable alternative, is a genuine warning sign worth taking seriously on its own.

Step 5: Search Independent Forums

Search the exact company name on Reddit and similar independent forums, ideally alongside neutral terms rather than leading ones. You're looking for any documented prior experience — positive or negative — from real people who aren't affiliated with the company. A complete absence of any independent discussion for a company actively recruiting contributors is itself a notable gap, especially compared to platforms with substantial discussion history.

How This Differs From Just Reading Reviews

This method is about independent verification, not relying on any single source's claims — including ours. We apply exactly this kind of verification before publishing a review, which is why our methodology page emphasizes direct testing and payment verification rather than simply repeating a platform's own marketing claims.

What If a Platform Passes Some Checks But Not Others?

Use judgment rather than treating this as a strict pass/fail test. A newer, smaller platform might genuinely have less press coverage simply because it's young, without being fraudulent. The strongest signal is the combination: verifiable funding or backing, named real leadership, a known payment processor, and at least some independent discussion. A platform missing all four simultaneously deserves real caution regardless of how polished its marketing looks.

Applying This to Platforms We Haven't Reviewed

If you come across an AI training platform not covered in our full platform index, this five-step method is exactly how to do your own initial assessment before investing application time. It won't replace the depth of direct testing we do for our reviews, but it's a genuinely solid first filter.
